Doctor K's view:

--"Obviously, to...not be treated like a second class citizen." What? Who has ever been treated like a second class citizen?

--Unsanctioned orgs "cannot use... facilities" for their activities. Well, I hardly think that space is at any kind of premium on-campus to hold meetings, socials, or anything of the sort. Anyone can walk into any public building on campus and do what they need to do, especially in the aforementioned media center, Timberline, classrooms, Belk or Moore Auds, the gym, etc.

--"Acceptance..." Yes they are students, and as such are already 'accepted' in the MHC family of students and faculty. You're not *really* talking about 'acceptance,' you're talking about 'legitimacy' within the community of organizations.

Because this whole subject centers around Open Doors, proponents and opponents will be labeling each other as 'gay-bashers' or gay-basher-bashers'. That's unfortunate. At the end of the day, this all boils down to politics.

If *any* start-up group wants to come together for the simple sake of coming together, there is no need for SGA representation. I run a clogging team in Jacksonville, but I'm not going to run to the Jax City Council to be 'recognized'. Why should I? I don't need their approval or blessing to do what I want to do with my little group of people.

Neither does Open Doors need SGA recognition to do what they want to do. Miller said so himself, they already have dozens of 'members' including both students AND faculty. That's great - I'm genuinely happy that they've gotten as far as they have. But they've also proved that they didn't need SGA's help to get where they are. Why do they only *now* need SGA when they've already accomplished something so wonderful for themselves?

I fail to see the need to pursue the blessing of the SGA. They feel that the only way they're going to be 'legitimate' is if they DO get the SGA recognition. They don't want to 'come together' and 'just be an org'; they want to have a voice in politics. That's fine! I'd be all for their cause if they just came out and said it. But they're not.

So no, in their original argument for existance, I don't agree with them. There are political undertones at work there, not to mention an unnecessary need for 'legitimacy' and it's insulting that they're going about it as such and trying to sell it as simply 'recognition'.

The general Mars Hill community is going to recognize and accept Open Doors and its members for who they are, period. What Open Doors is doing is begging for an acceptance that already exists - a waste of energy.
