First of all, I just want to say that I think it's great that so many people are offering informed, intelligent opinions on this matter and hoping to open the minds of others. I respect any opinion that is well-formed, regardless of whether or not I agree with it.
That being said, I am a little upset that this entire controversy has become such. I am not entirely informed on the law or the constitution, but it seems to me that the very idea of banning Open Doors from existing is unconstitutional.
The Constitution clearly says "All men are to be created equal." It does NOT say "All men are to be created equal, unless of course, they like other men." If that is supposed to be our record of the extreme law of the land, how can ANY institution ban ANY group of people who need to lean on each other for support? It's not constitutional, and in my personal opinion, it's not ethical.
A friend of mine who WILL remain nameless, is currently serving as a CSM officer. He once made a comment about killing all the gay people on campus. I was so appalled for so many reasons I almost did not return to CSM. I eventually realized that I should not let one ignorant comment from one ignorant person be enough to keep from a group of people who's company and service I do enjoy.
However, that comment did upset me enough to make me dig around scripture. I already knew parts of the Bible pretty well, but wanted more to support my support of homosexuals. Although I obviously in one afternoon did not read the entire Bible, I did find something interesting. In all of my flipping around I found ONE verse disapproving of homosexuals.
I know there are others so don't jump on me yet. See, I ALSO found about a million verses where Jesus was commanding us to love God as He loves us, and to love our neighbors as ourselves. This included SEVERAL verses where he commanded love to be "The greatest commandment." SO my conclusion on the matter was the same as my hypothesis: Homosexuality may be wrong, but it is more wrong for me or for anybody else to condemn them and isolate them.
They are not trying to isolate us, only to get us to accept them as human beings. Open Doors would be open to ANYBODY who has a problem with any form of bigotry. How could anyone in good conscience say such a group is wrong or that they do not have the right to exist?
