Attempting to promote understanding and respect is important

Organizations at Mars Hill serve a purpose, and the proposed Open Doors would have a purpose too, one that apparently is much needed on this campus. Exposing the student body to the concerns, feelings and lives of other students is not a bad thing. I would consider any student who acknowledges their homosexuality in an environment like this one to be incredibly brave and worth listening to.

Attempted understanding of our fellow humans is an important part of life. Open Doors simply wants other students to understand that they are part of the college community, too.

It is dangerous to begin the slippery slope of deciding what is right or wrong, Christian or un-Christian, worthy of funding or worthless. Where does it stop? Do we start evaluating established groups on campus to make sure they are “Christian” enough and only advocating the status quo within the “sensitive world” of the Southern Babtist convention or other conservative donors?

Do we stop sponsoring activities students may enjoy, learn from or even get scholarships from because in the eyes of a few, they don’t fall into line with the accepted ideology?

Indeed, this College professes that its Christian heritage compels us to love justice and to treat every individual equally with respect and compassion". It is through the inclusion and experience of others from diverse points of view that we often begin to see dimensions of truth previously unseen to us.

I think Mars Hill has to decide if it is going to be a true College searching for education and knowledge or revert to a Fundmentalist Bible college that is very conservative and closed minded.

I want the college to reflect what it stands for. Open Doors is about tolerance and respect for fellow HUMAN BEINGS, and I think that everyone on campus, whether gay, straight, protostant, Catholic, Jewish, etcetera, should be allowed that respect. In an enlightened educational atmosphere, intolerance doesn’t exist. So I guess Mars Hill is uneducated on this issue.
