Just for a small clarification:

I am SGA Secretary and I have been actively involved in this proposal and the process of getting it passed in SGA. Most people that know me personally on this campus know that I am probably one of the biggest advocates of freedom of speech a person can find!

The purpose of this new proposal was never to stifle anyone's freedom of speech. That's one of the things that this college is all about! BUT, there have been quite a few times that I have read something on the sidewalks of our campus that has offended me in some way. The first amendment does protect the right of freedom of speech, and I'm no political science major, but I also believe that our constitution protects us from saying things that are harmful to others.

There is ABSOLUTLEY nothing wrong with writing poetry, literature, quotes, etc. on the sidewalks of our campus. The purpose of this new policy is just to ensure that nothing offensive is written, and that the sidewalk chalk is cleaned up properly so that we do not have swirling rainbows of chalk residue for prospective students, alumni, trustees, etc. to be viewing.

This is a liberal arts school, but at the same time, we are rooted in a Baptist faith. There is nothing wrong with freedom of speech, but there has to be some form of government and censorship that regulates and organizes to protect EVERYONE and their opinions and views.

Hope that clears some things up for you all! Sincerely, Chelsey Gaddy SGA Secretary
