I find that attendance policies are frivilous. Different students learn in different ways and sometimes students just cannot learn by sitting in a classroom and listening to a professor talk and talk and talk. If a student is able to turn work in on time and get good grades as well as show up for tests and get good grades then their final grade should not be penalized because they have obviously learned the same amount as other students but maybe just in a different way.
Also I find that when classes have attendance policies that sure I try and show up but I am not as involved and usually don't pay attention while I'm there. But I am still able to do well on the tests and what not. Students are capable of understanding what works for them and what will help them get the grade that they want.
So I ask professors about this scenario:
Two students take a course, one makes a 75 and the other makes a 95. The student that makes a 75 has shown up to every class but has trouble understanding some important concepts of the class while the student who makes a 95 has missed 7 classes and understands all the material very well. The professor has an attendance policy of taking off half a letter grade (5 points) for every abscence over 3, which I know a professor that has this policy. So now both students finish with a final grade of 75. Is that really fair? I don't think it is.
