I don’t want to just repeat anything that has already been said. However, I do want to point out that I think there are actually three groups of people on campus. First you have the members and supporters of Open Doors. Then you have people who refuse to think about the issue but will continue to defend the point of view that they have been taught all of their life. And in the middle- where I find myself- are people who have honestly searched their hearts for answers, but cannot put on that pink ribbon.

My “journey” included more studying and praying over one issue than I can say I’ve ever previously done over anything. In the end, I found myself achingly unable to say that this is ok. That’s where I ended up.

One thing that’s great through all of this is the dialogue that has ensued. It’s important to talk about this and work through how YOU feel about it. It takes a little courage (especially when the sidewalks say you’re a “bigot”), but it’s worth it to find out what God is really telling you. A person I respect told me “We agree 90% on this issue”. That 90% is on how to treat people. With love and respect even when we disagree. Without name-calling, graffiti, or hate speech.

While on that subject…I am a council member for CSM. I am also deeply offended by the words supposedly spoken by a fellow member of council (mentioned in Katy’s response). These words do not represent in any way, shape, or form the views of CSM as a whole or the views of its council. We are about love, encouragement, faith, and a stand on the Bible: all of which speak against the hate found in those words.

No matter what the outcome is of the decisions we’re making in the following weeks, no matter what the media says, or the trustees say, or your friends say: Take the time to search out the truth for yourself.
