  • Jessi Young is trying to get an ROTC Program started at Mars Hill College. Some things she had stated:
  1. She would like to see Mars Hill partner up with ETSU’s ROTC program.
  2. Instructors from ETSU would come to the MHC campus and lead the programs
  3. Before ETSU and the Army could fund a ROTC program here at MHC, MHC would need to agree to accept Army credits. These credits can be used as elective courses. Any one can take ROTC courses, even if they are not planning to join the Army.
  4. MHC would need to assign a designated practice area an area where ceremonies could be held.
  5. The benefits of having an ROTC program at MHC, is that MHC would not have to pay a dime, would attract more students to the college, the Army pays for everything and will give an average of 9 full ride scholarships to students who join the army.
  6. The ROTC program teaches students how to be soldiers, history of army, different ranks, how to fight and protect your country, etc.
  7. If you have any questions please talk to Jessi Young

Meeting: 10:00 a.m. (not an official meeting)

Prayer: Brandon Anthony

Roll Call and Minutes: Trini Fares

Topics Discussed:

Committee representatives gave reports on what’s going on in their committees.

Smoke free surveys will be put in your campus mailbox. Please fill out and place in the on campus mailbox slot.

Class officers and executive board petitions will be coming out in April.

Maryanne Brown gave the SGA treasurers report- $1,254.

Today at 3:20 FCA will be going to NC Rescue Mission to feed the homeless. Anyone is invited to go and help.

Thursday night at 8 p.m. CAB is hosting a Mr. and Ms. Mars Hill pageant- held in Timberline

Thursday night from 6-7 p.m. LOD Legends Ball- will be held in the cafeteria

Anyone that holds a position in SGA needs to make sure that they attend the SGA meetings. You were elected due to leadership qualities and you need to make it an effort to attend every meeting. It is not fair to other SGA representatives that show up. By not having the majority of SGA representatives, we can not vote on important issues and discuss important topics that need to be handled.

Smoke Free Forum

Attendance: 15 people

Things that were discussed:

First we started off talking about visitor parking and where the spots were going to be located.
The Executive Board is asking for everyone's help and support on the issue of a smoke free campus.
A question was asked: "Will it be hard to regulate smoking for teachers"? Response: It will be very hard to regulate smoking for professors, but if the professors see that students don't want them to smoke in designated areas, then most likely they will be willing to not smoke in specific areas.
We are in the process of whether we should have smoking zones on campus or would smokers only be allowed to smoke on Main St.
This project will take time and we will have to work in increments.
If we do become a smoke free school, should we provide literature on why we are a smoke free school and the effects smoking can do to you and others?
Will this decrease the students that smoke to come to Mars Hill? Response: Not necessarily, plus this might encourage students who do not smoke to attend Mars Hill.
For now we would like to start getting people to stop smoking around high traffic areas.
If anyone has any more input on this idea, please notify an executive board member.

Lighting committee: They would like to put two lights on stairs behind Cafeteria/Brown, 2-3 lights in Fox parking lot, 2 lights in lower parking lot of Fox, 2 on Huffman/Myer Hill, 1-2 lights by softball field, and 1 by the chapel. We will pick five top spots were lights should be located. There was also talk about the lights behind Nash not properly working.

Treasurer Report: We have about $960. Most of the income has come from the collection of parking during home football games.

Junior Class project: They are in the process of setting a date. The junior class is in the process of lining up business people to come and teach students how to prepare for the GRE, proper etiquette, interviewing skills. The junior class project is open to anyone, but primarily they would like Junior and senior participation. There will be many great speakers and is a well worth attending. More information will later be given.

Dean Goforth announced that he will no longer forward e-mails to students/faculty relating to lost and found items and classifies. If you want these things posted, post them on the Well. Also Dean Goforth will only forward specific e-mails out once. For example- an organization is having a dance party, the organization makes a flyer and sends it to Dean Goforth, Dean Goforth will only send that flyer out once per week. This will cut back on the number of e-mails you will receive in your box.

Parking Committee:

Parking Committee spoke on having 5 or 6 visitor spots at the bottom of Huffman/Stroup/ Moore Hill. There should be 5 visitor spots at Turner/Gibson/Brown parking lot. The Townhouse parking lot should be made a visitor lot. The Parallel commuter parking spaces below Myers (heading towards the Apartments) should be made commuter/visitor spots from 5:00 p.m.-7:00 a.m. There should be zone parking for freshmen because the freshmen parking decal does not specify what dorm the car is registered to on campus.

Next Week in SGA (Oct. 18) we will be voting on the Parking Committee’s plan.
This week (Oct. 11) we held open discussion abut Parking Committee’s plan.
A student mentioned would security be willing to change freshmen decals, so that they can recognize what dorm the freshmen is living in? Response: They would probably not change the decals this year, but in years to come there should be a decal made to represent grade level and what dorm the car is registered to.
