Sophomore Travis Sullens checks out the gear
Outdoor Center Pitches Camp in Wren

If you glance to the left on the way to check your mail in Wren, you may be surprised to find that the game room is no more. In its place you will find rows of bikes and sleeping bags, as well as shelves filled with backpacks, sleeping pads, and medical kits. Even a bright green kayak is on display in what is now the new Outdoor Center.

Outdoor Center Thanks its Sponsors

Outdoor Center leader Grant Gosch and a student delegation recently traveled around Asheville to pay homage to the businesses that have made Mars Hill Outdoors a reality. The Outdoor Center has had to rely completely on fundraising and sponsorships during its first year because the college is not going to have a budget for the center until next year.

Ski Bus Offers Students Weekend Options

On a brisk evening while riding up the ski lift at Wolf Laurel, you can see the Blue Ridge Mountains surrounding a snow filled valley. Mile-high Big Bald Mountain rises to the north, with the Appalachian Trail meandering across the top of its treeless landscape. The snow may not resemble the fresh powder of Aspen, Colorado, but for $10, skiing at Wolf Laurel can be pretty good. Furthermore, Wolf Laurel is only fifteen minutes away from Mars Hill College.

Students Learning How to do the Basic Kayak Roll
MHC Outdoors Hosts Kayaking Session

Seven students with life jackets, helmets, and nose plugs sat in kayaks at the edge of the Mars Hill College swimming pool. Grant Gosch and Kurt Steinbaugh guided them into the water and let them get a feeling for the kayaks before they started their under water experience of the kayak roll.

Students After Bailey Mountain Cleanup on Saturday
Mars Hill Students Clear Trail Up Landmark Mountain

With machetes and swing blades in hand, service-eager students and others attracted by the college's new Mars Hill Outdoors program hiked up Bailey Mountain on November 6 to clear the brush. The scene had not been looked upon for a while. Tall weeds and overgrown brush had covered everything. A few swings of the sharp blades, however, made it clear the way would soon be open.

Outdoor Program Gets New Leadership

To promote outdoor activities Mars Hill College has hired an experienced outdoorsman able to lead trips ranging from sea kayaking to skiing. Grant Gosch, 26, will work about 20 hours a week to organize and promote outdoor activities and build interest.

Ten minutes from campus
Outdoor Lovers Endorse New Club

It's a perfect spot for fishing about ten minutes from Mars Hill. This is where Junior Steven Fitzgerald and a few of his friends spend free mornings and afternoons enjoying the river and fishing. Fitzgerald has plans on keeping his spot as much a secret as possible, but he is one of many students interested in outdoor activities here at Mars Hill College who favor a college-supported organization.
