Stress of Finals Same Even for Student Athlete
By Bria Smith

Winding down the school year can be a joy to many but also one of the most stressful times. Multi-page papers, take-home tests, final exams. These are all events that push the stress button for a college student, even an athlete.

For many students around campus finals are one of the most stressful times of a student’s life. Finals can be the difference between passing a course or earning a GPA booster. For Garrison McDowell, Lions running back, the same is true.

“To me, finals are stressful because it is a cumulative wrap-up of everything that you have learned in the semester,” McDowell said. McDowell is a physical education major with a minor in business.

With the work, papers and tests piling up, each student has a different method of dealing with the stress.

“I hang out with my roommates and watch movies as a way of relieving stress caused by school work,” McDowell said.

A common complaint among many students has been early exam times, but McDowell said he feels differently. This year two of McDowell’s four exams will take place at 8:00 a.m.

“I am relieved to have early exams, so I don’t have to stress the rest of the day,” McDowell said.

Many students study for final exams in various ways. Some make flashcards, attend study groups or spend late nights cramming. McDowell said he uses a variety of study methods.

“With certain classes I find that it is easier to study in groups, such as LAA and Principle of Management. But with math, I find that it is easier to study by myself,” McDowell said.

“Study guides are very beneficial because what is on the study guide is typically on the final exam,” he said.

By reviewing study guides, students have given themselves a better opportunity to succeed in their classes, he said.
