Next Flight Out Brings Adventure and Learning

Sarah Puckett, an International Studies major, spent a semester in Mexico, taking six courses in Spanish. Megan Brand, a vocal performance major, plans to study opera in Italy. Laura Jackson, a piano major, plans to attend a school of music in Scotland. All three are Mars Hill College students who have discovered study abroad.

Travel Class Brings Two Worlds Face to Face

Mars Hill College students have an opportunity each summer to visit Chiapas, Mexico, see ancient Mayan cities and present day Mayan towns, taste new foods, live in the rain forest and practice Spanish.

Late Nights Lonely in the Computer Lab

It is 1:00 a.m. in Computer Lab C in Renfro Library, the usual closing time nowadays. Unlike past years, the lab is not open 24 hours a day. Instead, it is shut down until the daily opening time at 6 a.m. Vandalism, pornography, and overall abuse that have taken place in the past have contributed to reasons why the Mars Hill College computer lab is no longer open 24 hours.

Prom Dress Project Makes Festivities Affordable

Two young women at Mars Hill College have started a project that will help high school girls find nice dresses for the prom season at prices that are very affordable. The project is called PromShare.
Junior Chelsea Haines started this project last semester and Senior Becky Lorenz is continuing the project this year.

Student Shares Passion for Clogging

Nick Spencer, a junior at Mars Hill College, recently decided that he wants to give back to the community in the one way he knows how --- clogging. Spencer is working with Mars Hill Elementary School to offer free clogging lessons to children in third through fifth grades.

Mars Hill Painter Seeks Wholeness in Art and Life

Scott Lowrey combines the red, green, blues, and other colors of the spectrum to create forms of plants, trees, and irregular objects which appear from the once bare canvas. As well, Scott Lowrey is a Mars Hill professor and art instructor.

Rock's Tattoo is now officially open for business on Main Street in Mars Hill.

Tattoo Parlor Opens

Rock-n-roll music fills the shop as the artist bends over his work --- designing a bass clef tattoo on the ankle of a college student. Born and raised in Big Laurel in Madison County, Rock has tattooed people of all ages, including a woman who was sixty years old.

Javelin Champ Owes Success to Injury

Last year when Nathan Galloway was a freshman at Mars Hill College, he figured that he would just go to class and run track in the afternoons. He had come to Mars Hill on a track scholarship but had never even thought about throwing the javelin. He certainly never dreamed that by the end of the season he would hold the Mars Hill College record in the javelin throw.

While major recording companies complain about nationwide Internet piracy, underground musicians flourish with it. Such computer software programs as Kazaa, Kazaa-Lite, and the old Napster created an enormous controversy with their appearance on the Internet.
