Recycling

Hilltop

I am a freshman here at Mars Hill College, and I feel that I am very privileged to have been granted the opportunity to attend such a profound institution of higher learning. Being located in the mountains gives Mars Hill a unique and very appealing environment. However, there are a few modifications that I feel would improve Mars Hill College.

One of them is the recycling of its trash.

Every year it is estimated that around 6 billions tons of garbage are dumped into city landfills. Not only are landfills smelly and unattractive, they are also hazardous to our environment. I think once a particular piece of land has been used as a landfill, that land is no longer of any use for a minimum of 20 years. I feel that Mars Hill should set the standard for other schools by standing up and proclaiming that we will not contribute to the tearing down of the earth's ecosystem, but that we will do our best to take care of the earth that has supported us for centuries.

Although recycling may seem like impossibility at first, I believe that it can be done. All great things that have ever been done seemed impossible at first.

In order to adequately address this problem, I think we would need to invest in a national recycling program. It would require recycling bins for paper, glass and plastic to be placed in each dorm. It would also require the students to take the initiative to use the bins. To help motivate students to take this initiative I think the college should publicize recycling as a socially acceptable principle. I think they should hold a recycling advertising workshop for all students and facility interested.

I think that if we started recycling it would set precedence for other schools and also make Mars Hill students more environmentally conscious. I think it is time we the people start taking better care of the earth instead of just using it like a large trash can that we throw all our junk in. By recycling, Mars Hill would not only be educating people for the future, but it would be insuring that those educated people have a healthy earth to live on for the rest of their lived and for the generations to come. So I challenge all my fellow students as well as my teachers to take this step toward bettering our earth. The famous astronaut Neil Armstrong once said, "One giant step for a man, one giant leap for mankind". I think if we as individual students and facility of Mars Hill College take one giant step toward recycling, then mankind will follow with a giant leap.

Ashley Bridges
