Building Access
(Scroll down for four letters
and a place for reader comment)

Dear editor,

I feel that I must make my problem known to you. My main concern on this campus is the lack of available places that I may go and study and also, the lack of buildings that we are able to take company after certain hours. When I bring my friends and loved ones up here, I would enjoy a place to sit and relax with them in a semi-private area. My room is always bustling with my roommate and her friends so that really isn't an option. I realize that the risk for vandalism is high when you leave places unlocked and open to students late at night. But if you would at least open certain places and see how things are handled, it might possibly work.

I have heard many students complain about bringing people to visit Mars Hill because there is absolutely no place to take them unless they want to rent a hotel room in Asheville . Many of the girls here have boyfriends back home that they would like to bring up and spend the evening with whom they want to. It's hard to do this when the only available places are outside, in the freezing cold, or in your room where you are interrupted every three seconds. The school needs to realize that the students need privacy every once in awhile. That doesn't mean they should send us off somewhere else to be alone. Mars Hill needs to provide this for us, for our mental health.

I have had two of my friends up here and we spent the night sitting out on a wall since my roommate was trying to sleep. We were sitting in a room but someone came and told us we needed to leave so he could lock up. It wasn't necessary; we were merely sitting on the couches in the room and talking about home. I told him that we weren't really doing anything and asked if we could stay for a little while longer. His answer was a flat-out no. It doesn't make sense why the staff fails to see how this is affecting us. They need to take a hard look at how to provide us a little more privacy and the freedom to go where we please. If college is really the place where we grow up and become responsible, then maybe this school should start treating us like adults.

Thank you, Ashley Poulter

Dear Editor,

It has been brought to my attention that the hours of certain buildings need to be extended. The gymnasium closes at nine o'clock on weekdays as does the weight room. These two facilities should be open at all hours for anyone who wants to use them.

Some people argue that the school does not have the money to pay the staffing required to keep these facilities open. However, there is no need for staffing as we are college students, and as college students, we are responsible enough to use our resources properly. Some people assume that we are not responsible enough to enjoy these facilities. However, this assumption is wrong. Responsible adults, as we are, do not abuse a privilege that is set before us.

Also, students need exercise. Obesity in this country is outrageous and the weight room and gym help to counter that with ways to get exercise. However, due to busy schedules, sports teams, and clubs, some students are not able to get to the gym or weight room until well after nine o'clock. These students then go without exercise due to the inaccessibility of the resources that they pay for.

I encourage every student to make a stand. There is no acceptable reason for resources that we pay for not to be accessible to us. College students are responsible enough to work out by themselves without the need for supervision. So, we need to demand to be treated like the responsible adults that we are.

Sincerely, Sarah Ross

To the Hilltop

As a freshman here at Mars Hill, there are several things that bug me about the school's condition and the things that go on here. Lately I have noticed there are several places that are locked that have not been before, such as the mailroom, the blue lounge in Wren, and the auxiliary gym.

I don't understand the need to lock all of these things; we are not vandalizing them, so why make them off limits? What makes the weekends any different from during the week? If anything, the weekends would be better because there are fewer students on campus. I suggest leaving these things open to the students. We are mature adults. We're no longer in high school; we don't need adults standing right over our shoulder telling us what to do and what not to do.

The weight room in Wren has hours that it is open and a majority of the time there isn't a supervisor in there, so why close off the rest of Wren? When leaving the auxiliary gym unlocked, leave the lights on; it's hard to play basketball in the dark. I know a lot of students who would like to have these places left open because they have free time and want to play basketball to keep themselves occupied or want a place to go, such as the Blue Lounge, just to get out of their room.

No one wants to spend their whole weekend trapped in their room watching TV or sitting on their computer. It's almost similar to being in prison, where you spend a majority of your time in your room doing nothing, with our time out being going to classes and eating. That's not a fun life, and it's not what college is about. I know I wouldn't want to do that, would you?

Sincerely, Brittany Trivette
