Powder Puff Game Celebrates Female Football
by Matthew Wilson

Quite as physical as their brothers

October is known as the month that brings oddness and mystery. Maybe that's why the sisters of Sigma Alpha Chi and the sisters of Gamma Chi Epsilon decided to have the first ever Powder Puff Football Game at Mars Hill.
The game was similar to the "Sloppy Bowl" held each year by the brothers of Theta Chi and the brothers of Zeta Chi Theta.
If you are unfamiliar with the hard hitting game held each semester called the "Sloppy Bowl," here is a quick run down. It is a football game with harder hits and more winning determination than most college football rivalries.
The same effect came when the sisters of Sigma Alpha Chi took on the sisters of Gamma Chi Epsilon. The womens' version of this game was held on the first day of October at five o'clock in the afternoon.
Each sorority appointed coaches to help the girls understand the game a little bit better. Sigma's coach was their big brother Matt Wilson of Theta Chi, while Gamma had their big brother Jarred Cohn of Delta Kappa Theta. Each coach had a different game plan.
Sigma had a good rushing attack with Freshman Jahane Zarghami as running back. Sigma did have a decent passing attack but the key play for the Sigma girls had to be the option run.
The Gamma girls had a good rushing attack with Senior Chelsea Long as running back. She recorded the longest rushing touchdown of the game. Gamma's defense shut down Sigma's rushing attack in the second half, which made the Sigma girls change their game plan to a passing attack.
With all the offensive schemes, defense proved to be the game winner for Sigma, who had two interceptions returned for touchdowns.
At the beginning of the game, each girl wore a white shirt that said which sorority she played for, but after the game the only color each side wore was grass-stained green.
Both sides played as if the Super Bowl trophy was on the line. The funny thing was, nothing was on the line - no money, no big championship ring, no one was screaming that her sorority was going to Disneyland. The only things earned were bruises and - for one team at least - a victory. At the end of the game, Sigma Alpha Chi defeated Gamma Chi Epsilon by the score of 4-1.
Whoever said girls cannot be as physical as boys needs to explain their reasoning to Sigma and Gamma.
Editor's note: Reporter Matt Wilson was the coach for Sigma Alpha Chi.
