The Rocks Speak
by Joshua Keller
Lately many Greeks of Mars Hill College have noticed that certain rocks have been painted over, letters have been removed, and signs have appeared on people's automobiles.
Many organizations have a sacred rock. Aaron Slate of Delta Kappa Theta says, "It is nice to drive by on the highway (19-23) and be able to point it out to people and say, 'That is the fraternity that I am in.'" Recently, however, the big Theta Chi above the frontage road just south of the Mars Hill exit vanished under splashes of white exterior latex, even as other unseen hands have refreshed other symbols that only weeks ago looked weathered and dim.
Nina Gilliam of Gamma Chi Epsilon says, "The rock to me is representation off campus. People coming in can see the Greek letters and make others wonder about the Greek life at Mars Hill." To Diane Gambrell of Sigma Alpha Chi, "My letters mean a lot and are very important to me. I am proud to see them displayed on our rock."
