The much-anticipated first game of the Mars Hill College Lion’s football season included a surprise visit from Head Coach Mark Richt of the Georgia Bulldogs. His son is a new quarterback for the Lions.
Jon Richt is a transfer from Clemson University and made his first appearance as a Lion in Saturday's game at North Greenville University in Tigersville, SC. The Lions won 28-0.
Richt's dad, a celebrated young coach of the Georgia Bulldogs, made an unexpected call at the game and visited with players and coaches. His appearance was welcomed by both teams.
Richt was seen very briefly in the stands.
After the game, the elder Richt congratulated the Lion coaches and players on their win against the Crusaders.
The season opener came with forecasts for rain, and fans prepared for the wet weather with rain coats and umbrellas. During the first half both teams had trouble getting off to a good start. Mars Hill chalked up three turnovers, two in the first half. The Lions finally made it on the board with a touchdown by Alex Rose.
Rose, a transfer from Auburn University, made his first appearance memorable by scoring the first touchdown of the game, putting the Lions ahead 7-0.
Later in the first half, Allen Woerner gained the Lions yardage with a short pass from the quarterback.
With the first half closing, the Lion defense showed tremendous heart to keep the Crusaders out of the end-zone. The Lions left half-time with a 7-0 lead.
As the second half began, three minutes into the third quarter Jonas Randolph scored a touchdown with a 10-yard rush to the right into the Crusader end-zone. This gave the Lions room for error with a 14-0 lead.
Not long after, Frankie Waters caught a tackle-breaking touchdown pass from Luis Cruz. He eluded being tackled by several opponents to make the 28-yard touchdown. Waters gave the Lions a 21-0 lead over the Crusaders.
With seven minutes left in the fourth quarter, new quarterback Richt threw the final touchdown of the night. A 15-yard pass to tight end Chad Fekany sealed the Lions victory over North Greenville. With one win under their belt, the Lions will meet Gardner-Webb on Saturday.
