Business Major Heads for Wall Street

Cuthbertson in the Big Apple
People at Mars Hill College know him as "Smiley."

Graduating Senior Julian Cuthbertson received the nickname his freshman year, and the name has stuck.

Julian tells the story of how a fellow member of the football team was cutting his hair in Gibson and started calling him "Smiley" because he was always smiling. Later on that night, another member of the team called him "Smiley" also. "Since they were both team leaders, they brought it back to the locker room and it kinda stuck," he says.

Julian was definitely all smiles these past two weeks as he was named Senior of the Year by a vote of his senior class; selected as one of three graduation speakers from the senior class, and honored as one of three Student Support Services Academic Award winners for 2007-08.

Julian is originally from Charlotte, N.C. He decided to come to Mars Hill for several reasons. "It was far enough away from home that I wouldn't want to go home every weekend, but if I wanted to I could." He was also a member of the Mars Hill football team for three years, so he was awarded an athletic scholarship. He also says he had a really good visit when he came to Mars Hill to see what it was like.

Julian is well known around campus for his active involvement in student affairs. He is a student ambassador, Resident Director in Myers dorm for two years, judicial board member, and chief of defense for the Student Government Association.

As a Bonner Scholar, he volunteered hundreds of hours at Emma Elementary in Asheville, helping students with reading and writing. He is also among a small group of students selected to teach Math 101 at the college.

His success isn't ending when he leaves Mars Hill. He has just been hired by Morgan Stanley, an investment banking firm in New York City.

Julian worked for Morgan Stanley in an internship for ten weeks last summer. The internship counted as his advanced accounting internship for his business finance major.

"The whole summer was an evaluation. It was basically a summer-long interview," he said. In mid-September, Morgan Stanley told him he had received the job. He will be moving to New York City in June.

At Morgan Stanley, he will be working as a financial analyst. He will be doing daily financial reports that go out to the public, as well as financial statements. He is excited and ready for the job, but not ready to be up North: "I like the South better." He plans to stay at least two years and then would like to come back down South.

He says that he really is going to miss Mars Hill College. "I'm just going to miss college life in general and all my friends and teachers…I'll miss the scenic area. I won't get that in New York City." He likes the small town atmosphere of Mars Hill. "People know me here, and I'm going to have to start all over again."
