Guitar Hero Returns with Twice the Punch
by Rob Taylor

Where two heros can play a single song
The phenomenon that is Guitar Hero II has infested PlayStations and XBOX 360s since its inauguration as the first interactive "rock star" video game. Being able to control the guitarist by churning out soaring lead riffs, or pound out chugging bass lines while performing in front of a huge crowd of adoring fans would be a dream come true for many. Now you can make that dream come true.

Well, sort of. The rush you get from playing Guitar Hero II in front of an audience is rather amazing. It's not the same as rocking a live venue by far, but should you perform a song well, the result is usually cheers and high fives from your "adoring crowd."

This highly popular interactive game has also invaded Mars Hill College. The fact that Guitar Hero II is fun for both girls and guys helps this game maintain its bite.

Senior Dusty Poore says, "The versatility of the game is great. From Rush to Cheap Trick, Lamb of God to Avenged Sevenfold (all bands with unique styles); Guitar Hero II has something for everyone. Whether I'm playing a friendly competition against someone, or trying to gain credibility through the career mode, I always find something entertaining in this game."

Any style
To score well and gain more credibility through career mode, you must play songs accurately to please the crowd. The player receives a percentage score based on how many notes they played correctly.

Guitar Hero II, from the well-known video game developer RedOctane, follows Guitar Hero, also a critically acclaimed rhythm-based guitar game. Guitar Hero II boasts an expanded track list, more locations to play and even brand-new play modes. This sequel aims to rock longer and harder than its predecessor, Since the release of the original, RedOctane has teamed up with music game developer Harmonix to improve the overall quality of the game.

The game's eclectic track list encompasses all forms of rock: from hair metal to classic rock to modern day metal to alternative rock. In total, Guitar Hero II features more than 55 songs. The new game types include a multiplayer co-op mode where players can play not only the lead guitar track, but rhythm or bass as well. This allows two players to take on different sections of the song simultaneously, giving them the camaraderie found only in a band.

The game has become so popular, Mars Hill fraternity Delta Kappa Theta set up a projector and screen in the cafeteria. Many students offered their abilities as rock stars and jammed for the eating public of Mars Hill's campus.

Fans at the Bier Garden in Asheville
Senior Michael Davis says of his times spent playing Guitar Hero II, "I love that game. It is so popular, Bier Garden (an Asheville bar) even has the game available for anyone to play, and it's free. They had a competition there a few months ago that I didn't compete in because there are some people who are amazing at the game. The new songs and new options, as well as the improved characters are all awesome. I hope they come out with a Guitar Hero III."
