Sorority Stages "Senior" Prom
by Sally Carswell

Prom Queen
The Delta Zeta National Sorority hosted a Senior Prom at the Mars Hill Retirement Community on April 19.

As the residents arrived for an afternoon of dancing and dining with their friends, they were greeted by several sisters under a doorway balloon arch and were given plastic necklaces and corsages.

One woman greeted a sister with a kiss on the hand and exclaimed, "I love young people, and I love to be young!" Many other residents shared her enthusiasm.

The name of each resident in attendance was put into a voting box. One man and one woman were later randomly drawn as the Senior Prom King and Queen.

One resident, Lois, was very excited about the Senior Prom. "The war was going on when I was in school, so my classmates and I did not have a prom. I'm 81 years old and going to my first prom!"

Mars Hill College students Nick Cartwright and Josh Dixon volunteered to dance with the female residents. "All the women seemed to enjoy it. They really liked Nick's English accent," said Delta Zeta sister Samantha Delgado.

While watching the boys dance with her friends to Frank Sinatra, Mars Hill Retirement Community resident Eileen told one of the sisters that she loved rock music, especially Elvis. Her son had just gotten his drivers license when Elvis was popular. His music made Eileen think back on her life and the good times she had.

After sharing a few memories, Eileen announced that she was going to her room to grab an Elvis CD for the group to dance to. As soon as the play button was pushed, all of the residents who were able got up and began doing the twist.

"I thought the best part of the prom was when we danced to Elvis. The residents really got into it," said Delta Zeta sister Caitlin Daly.

The sisters arrived an hour early to decorate the room. They made several balloon arches, made decorations for the tables, and made a backdrop for photos. More than 20 residents came to the prom. They were able to have their pictures taken, eat a light lunch, and dance.

Mary-Lela Weathers, philanthropy chairperson, has been planning the senior prom for months. "I came up with the idea for a senior prom in September and have been working on it since January."

The sisters split up into committees to manage the workload. Senior Elizabeth Newton was on the decorations committee. "It was really fun being able to work with my sisters to make the event area beautiful," she said.

The Mars Hill Retirement Community staff provided all the refreshments and a photographer for the event.

All Delta Zeta chapters nationwide are expected to participate in as many philanthropy events as possible, and the Mars Hill chapter is no exception. The local chapter has worked with Habitat for Humanity, Mission Hospital, Gallaudet University, The Painted Turtle, and many other local organizations.
