A big brother

A memorial service for Phillip Andrew Fitzhugh will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 1, in Broyhill Chapel. He died on April 22 as the result of a motorcycle accident.

Fitzhugh, 21, was originally from Arden, N.C., and attended T.C. Roberson High School where he played football. He came to Mars Hill College in the fall of 2005 and attended through the spring of 2007. He transferred to Limestone College, but was re-enrolled at Mars Hill for next fall.

He was a brother of the local fraternity Delta Kappa Theta. "He was very involved with paintball tournaments, and he loved motorcycles---that's all he talked about," says Josh Hasty, DKT's current president. "He was a great brother in the fraternity and always put it first."

Fitzhugh's 8-year-old sister Pamela was very special to him, Hasty said. "He loved [her] very dearly, and was a great role model…He had many friends from all different groups. He didn't care what their social status or affiliation was--he was just a friend."

He loved Superman, and in his memory, DKT will be selling Superman decals. The decals will be sold until the end of the semester and will be mailed to each individual during the summer. Students can contact Ryan Hubbard or any other DKT member for information.

Theta Chi Fraternity is working on adopting a highway in his memory. The road sign will read: "Theta Chi in Memory of Phillip Fitzhugh." In exchange for getting the highway sign, the fraternity must agree to clean around the road four times a year.

According to the police report, Fitzhugh was driving on his motorcycle on Leister Highway. He was traveling northbound on N.C. 63 when a 2004 Nissan pulled onto N.C. 63 from Compton. Both Fitzhugh and the driver of the Nissan tried to avoid the crash.

Fitzhugh was taken to Mission Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.. The wreck is still under investigation. Anyone who witnessed the accident, or has any information can contact Officer Scott Pruett at 828-251-4089 or 828-450-8863.

Funeral services were held Sunday, April 27, in the chapel of Groce Funeral Home, Lake Julian.

A neighbor of Fitzhugh's family is collecting contributions to assist with his funeral. Checks made out to Mr. & Mrs. James Fitzhugh may be sent c/o Dana Januszkiewicz, 104 Sleepy Gap Road, Arden, NC 28794
