Summer is right around the corner, and college students are thinking about summer jobs and seeing old buddies. Only one thing gets in the way- EXAMS.
Here's how five Mars Hill College students prepare for those terrifying tests.
Mitchell Williams, a freshman at Mars Hill College, has a grade point average of 2.9 and is taking five classes this semester. "One of the best tips I use when taking an exam is to breathe," Williams said.
Sometimes Mitchell gets distracted when studying for an exam. "It is tough for me to study when my roommate is in the room because he talks and constantly says stuff," said Mitchell. One study strategy is to "go over the notes from all my classes," he said. Mitchell is taking three final exams.
Chad Eldridge, a freshman at Mars Hill, has a grade point average of 2.46 and is taking five classes. "I think eating a good breakfast before taking an exam is an important tip because it gets the mind flowing," he said. Chad said he finds it easier to study by going over test reviews." He is set to take three final exams before the school year is over.
Freshman Tyler Clarke, has a grade point average of 2.0 and is currently taking five classes. "As a helpful tip to relieve stress before taking an exam, I like to run and exercise, and I even go swimming," Clarke said.
Tyler really puts his mind to studying when it comes time for exams. "I just basically sit down and ask myself some questions and look them over. I sometimes study with a group of people," he said. He will take just two final exams at the end of the semester. He feels a little more pressure during finals than he does at midterm. "I get more nervous about finals because at midterm you still have a chance to see where you stand and bring your grade up, while as finals you don't."
Sophomore Dustin Hughes has a grade point average of 3.24 and is currently taking four classes. "I just relax and listen to music when studying for an exam" he said. "I usually just go over the material that was a little confusing in class." Dustin has no year-end projects but will be taking four finals.
Senior Julian Cuthbertson has a grade point average of 3.7 and is taking five classes. "I don't really study for exams," he said. "I just take a lot of notes and listen in class and do assignments, because it cuts down the amount of studying."
He does not have a hard time focusing during exams. "I can focus anywhere, and I use my homework to study a little, but I mainly just listen in class." He will finish up with three final exams.
He usually remains calm during tests. "If I am not real familiar with something, I make sure I know enough to know what is not the answer," he said. "A lot of my classes are cumulative. If you don't know the first part of classes, then you won't know the second." In other words, if you understand the beginning parts of classes, you will find it easier to understand the later parts.
After exams, students can clear their minds and enjoy the long summer break!
