Memories of Phil Fitzhugh

You Are Our Superman:

Michael Neal and the DKT Brothers:

Phil Fitzhugh was a great guy who loved the game of football and his Green Bay Packers, and he enjoyed Madden to the fullest. He would challenge anyone to a game, and as far as I know of, no one ever beat him. He would offer any incentive to whoever played him, just to motivate them to give him a great game and try to beat him. The greatest experience that I'm sure most people experienced with Phil was his love of music and the time he spent with his guitar, playing Metallica and his other favorites. He lived his life to the fullest, and there is probably not much that he didn't experience while here.
He was always extremely caring and supportive of others.

Best Friend, Twin, Brother. We loved to pick on each other. Late night phone calls to tell each other how much we love one another. Our promises will be kept. So much to say, but our memories will never die. Your body may be gone, but your soul and spirit still lives on. I love you, brother, and miss you more than you know.

Three weeks ago from today and yesterday he came and saw me at work, and we were matching on Friday: black shirt and camo bottoms. Thursday he was wearing his favorite sweatshirt, and he was on his bike, and it started raining, so he left and was going to get his jeep and hang out with me. Friday we were going to go out to dinner, but instead we went to the clogging show. The whole entire time he was checking for his little brother in DKT, Dustin Presley. He was so proud of you, Sweetie.

I remember going to [his sister] Pamela's open house at her school last year around this time. Pamela and I were sitting in her classroom while Phillip talked with his parents, and Pamela and I read a book, and she showed me what she was working on in school. After that Pamela wanted to go show me her book fair in the library. We were looking at animal books, because Pamela is an animal lover.

My freshman year I remember my summer orientation, and it was Phillip, Devon Kearney, Charlie Limbo, and Brandon Mason and me with Lisa Wachtman, making our schedule for Fall 2005. I was sitting by Phillip in the SSS computer lab and was just starting to get to know him, but my first impression of him was completely different from the person he was. After that we were hanging out all the time.

Last year when I lived in Bailey Mountain, my mom would go to Costco and buy soy chocolate milk in bulk, and I had put half a box in the fridge, and I had gotten Phillip obsessed about it. He texted me to make sure I had some soy chocolate milk for him, and I told him we were good to go, and he said, Okay, I'm coming. And he came over and had probably like 30 juice-box sized things of soy chocolate milk.

Saturday, April 12, Stacey Heavner and I went to the mall and walked into Pet Luv, and we saw a miniature Dachshund and absolutely fell in love with her…. So after long consideration, I got her, and right when I was about to pay for her, I saw Pamela and Phillip's parents, and I had been texting Phillip saying I'm getting her and how cute she was and all of that. Pamela came up to me and wanted to hold her, so she did. I told her that Stacey, Pamela, Phillip, Tucker, and my new puppy and I would go to the park this weekend, April 25, and play with them, so on Wednesday, April 23, a few of us went to his house, and Pamela came home from a friend's house, and she came up to me and gave me a big hug and asked me about my little dog and how she was doing. So we plan on still going to the park as we had planned to do anyway.

It is very hard to put into words my thoughts right now. Phillip was always so full of energy and one who enjoyed life. He was well liked and had a good personality. I have to admit that if he became upset about something or someone, you would definitely know it. I remember when I resigned as advisor of the organization, there were some brothers who didn't understand my reason for leaving, and Phillip was one of them. When I would pass Phillip on campus and speak, he would turn his head and pretend he had heard nothing. The other fellas in the group were upset but at least cordial when I would speak to them, but not Phillip; he was mad and made no attempt to hide it. What Phillip didn't realize was that I could be just as determined as he was. I would see Phillip on campus and go out of my way to make sure that I wished him a good morning or say hello. Eventually after a few weeks and continual determination on my part, Phillip cracked a smile one day and said something back. I knew then that everything was going to be all right, and it was. While advising the fraternity, I always referred to the brothers as my "kids." Phillip was special just like all the others. He will be missed but never forgotten. He will always be a brother.
