The two top teams are about to clash in the upcoming Mars Hill College intramural basketball championship game on Thursday, April 24. The Myers-Stroup Vikings will play the A-Team.
Tee-shirts will be awarded to the winners. Daniel Amick, coordinator of intramurals, predicts an exciting game. "The best two teams are playing for the championship."
The other six teams that signed up for intramural basketball are the Caroline's, Da Hood, Fourth Floor Outlaws, The Swimmers, The Loungers, and The Young Gunners.
The intramural basketball season started April 7, and the games have been played on Mondays and Thursdays nights in Chambers Gym. "It has been a great tournament," Amick said. "Most all the games have been pretty competitive, but sadly there is no Cinderella story."
Going into the final night, all teams will have played two 20-minute games.
Players just do not come out and play street ball. There are rules and a ref to keep rough play and fouls within limits. If a player gets fouled, then that player goes to the free throw line. Each team has to have at least one woman player.
"These are normal rules, except women's scoring counts double," Amick said. "Intramural competition has a long history at this college, and basketball is one of the more popular sports."
Some of the teams put a lot of fun and excitement into their game. "The Caroline's do a huddle before each game, ending up in a loud Caroline chant," said Amick.
Antonio Lowery, a football player for the Mars Hill Lions who injured his right hand a couple weeks ago, got his fun by coaching the Myers-Stroup Vikings. "His coaching philosophy really made the Myers-Stroup Vikings unbeatable," Amick said. Some teams would even show up before game time at nine o' clock to get in some practice.
A double-elimination tournament on Monday, April 21, determined which teams would contend for the top three places.
The Myers-Stroup Vikings and the "A" Team will meet in the championship game in the winners bracket, as in a regular single elimination contest. Meanwhile the losers in the first round dropped into a second bracket where The Loungers and The Swimmers were eliminated by losing again to The Outlaws and Da'Hood, who will meet the losers from the second round of the winners' bracket Thursday.
"The Young Gunners, Da Hood, The Fourth Floor Outlaws, and the Caroline's lost once, and will play out the losers bracket for third place," Amick said.
The Fourth Floor Outlaws will play The Young Gunners, while Da Hood will play the Caroline's. The last team standing will be awarded third place.
The championship match-up between The Myers-Stroup Vikings and the "A" Team will be the game to watch this Thursday night, said Amick. "The Myers-Stroup Vikings have not been beaten. Nobody has gotten close to beating them."
Steven Williams, team captain of the Myers-Stroup Vikings, is pumped and ready for the game. "Nine - Oh and one more to go," Williams said. "With motivation from God and more team unity, we are going to win the championship."
Perfection is on the line at nine Thursday night in Chambers Gym.
