Earth Day Celebration Meshes with Spring Fling

By Laura Hudgins

Spring Fling happens every year at Mars Hill College but this year with an added twist. The usual live entertainment, games and good food will also celebrate Earth Day, celebrated nationally every April 22, with specific activities to raise awareness of the environment.

Actually, the whole week has planned activities and challenges -- to learn about recycling, living green and hiking. Lifeworks, located in the first floor of Renfro Library, is helping out with events throughout the week.

“There will be tickets at every event you attend, and you’re entered to win prizes,” said Amy Carraux of Lifeworks.” One of the coolest prizes you could win is a really nice bicycle.”

Some of the week’s main events include the “Live Green: Dress your Earth,” where gently used clothes can be donated.  A t-shirt exchange is scheduled and info on how to “Dress Green” will be provided. A t-shirt and clothing “Recycle and Swap” will allow students to give a t-shirt or an old pair of jeans and exchange them with someone for something else. You also can learn about what happens to your clothing when it is thrown out.

Other events include films, a hybrid car show and recycling education.
