Mikeschair Brings Songs of Assurance and Hope
by Michael Costello

Mikeschair - The boys in the band
|
As the sun shed it's last rays into the loft on Wednesday evening, Mikeschair, a band out of Nashville, began their show with a bang, literally.
With loud guitar chords, heavy drum beats and even a violin, they kicked off with an unreleased song called "Awaken." Lead singer Mike Grayson said, "This song is about acting stupid together and dancing because it's wonderful!" He gave similar introductions to each song they played, making the crowd a part of the show as they became involved in the passion and message of the band.
"What's most important to us, and what we want others to know, is a relationship with Christ. There is no typical Christian. We all pursue God in the way He needs us to."

More messages of hope and redemption followed, such as "Hold me" with the line "Sometimes I don't feel like getting up and saying 'Hallelujah.' I just simply need God to prove Himself to me."
The crowd started to dance with the band with the song "Free."
"...Many times we walk around with burdens and baggage. Jesus wants us to lay them down, but we so often don't."
"Every time I step into this light I feel like a helicopter has found me," Grayson remarked as he moved around the stage, whereupon, to general laughter, the spotlights all went out.
Nearing an end, he declared, "My goal is to get everyone here to dance tonight. If you're not dancing, then I will come and dance with you." Then he did jump off the stage and begin dancing with some of the more sober-acting people.
The band came together at Belmont University, a 4,500-student Baptist school in Nashville that offers a degree in Education and Music Business.
The name Mikeschair comes from an actual chair, according to Mike Grayson.
"We were all freshmen at Belmont, and the majority of the band lived on the first floor of the dorm. I lived on the Third, so I brought a chair down to Seth's room, where we practiced, because I wanted to have something of mine in that room since I spent so much time in there. I even put a sign on it that said "Mikeschair." One night we had a showcase, and we had to think of a name for our band, and the only name that sounded cool was a joke name we had made - Mikeschair. We've rolled with it ever since."

The forming of the band was natural. "We all sort of fell into it. Looking back, we see how God led us into this. He wanted us to do this. We started just playing guitars. Then, our violinist came and asked to play, then we got a drummer and that's how it all happened. We were doing it for fun, and then it got serious. Our mission is to continually grow and find the will of God."
Bass player Jon Haire added, "It's a brotherhood. It's attractive. I wouldn't just jump out of it for anything. God is continually giving us messages. Our music is what God is showing us. These songs are our own testimonies and stories."
The night ended on a joyful tone with one last song that got everyone dancing.

I'd like to thank Mike Costello for writing a great article!
Mikeschair came to Mars Hill in the Fall of 2005, and the students that attended the concert fully enjoyed themselves! That is why I had them come back to MHC for our Spring Fling. We are hoping to bring them back in the Fall of next year as well!!
