Kaylon Cochran - Shadow Truths
"Things need not have happened to be true. Tales and dreams are the shadow truths that will endure when mere facts are dust and ashes and forgot." -Neil Gaiman

Since elementary school I have been fascinated with myths and stories of the fantastic. As I grew up I absorbed everything I could that showed me worlds and beings unknown. Comic books, cartoons, movies, books on myth and folklore became my passion. Through the medium of fantastic fiction and legend, I observe the hopes, fears, ideals, and dreams of the varied peoples of Earth. My interest in comic books, our modern answer to Mythic tales, led to my involvement in art. My parents saw that I was drawing and bought me sketchbooks that I soon filled with things that, due to my age, only greatly resembled superheroes. My absolute need to read and observe as much myth, legend, sequential and cartoon art as possible continues to grow---, and it is the driving force behind my goals in life and the core of the art of my senior exhibition.

In this series of drawings I want to give the observer a glimpse into a small corner of my thoughts, to see what is flying through my mind at any given moment. I chose to represent imagination in its raw, unhindered state, with ideas and characters flowing to the fore or fading into the background, vying for the chance to reach the physical world. In creating these images, I sought to create and utilize characters that were my own, but would hit upon archetypes and ideas that would be familiar to a large number of people.

I see these pieces as an illusory chaos, guided by a method that is not instantly obvious. Imagination is not slave to concrete order. My intention with this show is to create a unique series of images that exists effectively as a complete whole. The observer then will be able to stay with the image and discover its seemingly hidden aspects upon closer inspection. If one of the parts of that whole provokes a reaction of laughter, it is not detrimental to the value of the work. Inherent in the creation of these characters is a whimsical attitude. We need not deny ourselves the miracle of being silly in order to create a serious piece of art.

Unlike its inspiration, my art isn't narrative. My works represent the realm from which stories and dreams are born, or perhaps exist in our deep subconscious. The cartoon- like figures in my drawings are intended as flickering beacons of light in a mental sea of images.
