Pirates Take Over Theatre

The Mars Hill College Theatre presents the classic Gilbert and Sullivan opera, The Pirates of Penzance at the Owen Theater April 14-17. More than 30 actors will be on stage at one time. Including the production staff, more than 50 students are involved in the play.

Rising Senior Ben Tallcot won the presidency of the Student Government Association over outgoing SGA Secretary Nina Gilliam in an election characterized by low voter turn out. Write-in candidates filled several class offices.

Senior Artists Display Work

Paintings distill "artificial truths" of the media, while prints of yellow rubber duckies recall the simplicity of childhood. Unfired clay vessels symbolize the self. Floating cartoon-like figures invite inspection. The works of Mars Hill College Seniors Jennifer Hume, Elizabeth Hart, and Kaylon Cochran are on display this month at the college's Weizenblatt Art Gallery.

Service Work Honored

Mars Hill College recognized its champions of conscience and service at awards ceremonies April 13. Graduating Senior Frank Beacham - chemistry major, former student chief justice, peace activist, multi-tasking service volunteer, and scholar - gave the main address as winner of the G. McLeod Bryan Caring Award.

Weston and Patty Burgess Receive The I. Ruth Martin Award

Weston and Patty Burgess received the "The I. Ruth Martin Award" on April 13 for their contributions to the community. According to Assistant Chaplain Debra Huff, The I. Ruth Martin Award is for "A Christian individual who has served faithfully without any spotlight recognition."

Mars Hill Ball Players Speak on Steriod Issue

Nine Mars Hill College baseball players were surveyed about steroid use in Major League Baseball. The responses varied on the topics of known side effects, different types of steroids, whether or not the newly installed testing method would prevent any of today's players from taking steroids, and if the drug gives an unfair competitive advantage.

Upward Bound Scholars Win State

It is the North Carolina State Scholar's Bowl and it is all coming down to the final question. The question that can win it for the Mars Hill team is about a metamorphic form of limestone rock. The Upward Bound program at Mars Hill College, led by Academic Coordinator Mark Tabone, will be heading to Atlanta to compete in the regional against teams from seven states.

Downtown Asheville's most widely acclaimed music club, The Orange Peel, is showing no sign of slowing down whatsoever. With a sold out show of "The Bard" himself, Bob Dylan, recently selling out 949 tickets in under two hours, The Orange Peel has become the place for big named bands to play.

The Bailey Mountain Cloggers will be holding their annual spring clogging concert Friday, Saturday and Sunday April 23, 24, and 25. Applying years of professional expertise, director Jay Ledford has brought together a concert comprised of three acts: a traditional act, funky act, and a "contribute to Broadway" act.

Greeks Choose a Goddess

The brothers of Delta Kappa Theta put on their annual Greek Goddess Pageant in the Loft on Sunday April 4th. The room was dim, and the fog machine was on, adding a goddess-like atmosphere to the stage. Music that you would expect in a gladiator movie played as the Delta Kappa Theta brothers came out from behind the curtain dressed in togas and stood around the stage.
