Recognition and Awards for Service and Leadership
Members of the Mars Hill Community who distinguished themselves for public service and leadership were honored at the Community Service Convocation on April 13.
Community Awards

The I. Ruth Martin Award: Weston Burgess, counselor for Student Support Services, and Patty Burgess, self-employed cleaning business.

Educator Service Award: Carolyn Franklin, MHC Class of 1988, assistant principal, Madison Middle School.
Student Awards

Student Government Association Award: Denisha Kirk, singer, actress, scholar.

Michael Emory Award: Amanda Orders, elementary education major; student volunteer at the Open Door in Johannesburg, South Africa, working with children abandoned or orphaned by parents afflicted by AIDS; intern with Asheville City schools.

Athletic Department Service Award: Ben Jackson, cross-country runner; senior class president; on numerous faculty and student committees; Student Ambassador; Biology Club; over 200 volunteer hours at Mission St. Joseph's Hospital in Asheville; 1,000 hours in surgery unit at Lexington Medical Center; youth soccer league referee.

G. McLeod Bryan Caring Award: Frank Beacham, chemistry major; math instructor; tutor; former student chief justice; over 200 volunteer hours at Mission St. Joseph's Emergency Room; Iraq War Protestor; chair MHC Nature Trail Clean up; vice president of Kiwanis Club of Madison County, Inc.; Clemson University summer research.
Faculty and Staff Awards

G. McLeod Bryan Caring Award: Jim Utterback, assistant professor of business; chairman, Madison County Habitat for Humanity.

SGA Faculty Award: Gail Sawyer, professor of social and behavioral sciences.

SGA Staff Award: Charlotte Norton, Soda Shop.
