SGA Officers Elected

The Student Government Association has new officers for the upcoming year of
2007-2008. President
is Ryan Hubbard, vice president is Alex Sams, secretary is Trini Fares and treasurer
is Maryanne Brown. All four ran unopposed. New class officers were also
elected during voting on April 10.

Throwing rocks. That’s what Osama Sabbah said he would be
doing if he weren’t in the United States attending college. Sabbah
came to Guilford College in Greensboro, N.C., on a Bonner Scholarship.
But in America -- the place he came in an effort to combat violence --
he experienced the worst America has to offer.

Four Men of Mars Hill Turn to ‘God’s
Light’

Laughter and the sound of high-spirited gospel filled the air. The four
members of God’s Light made their way down the aisle and settled
in a pew at St. James AME Church in Asheville. For Mars Hill College students
Demarcus Thompson, Kenny Cheek, Tavarus Hill, and Antonyo Douglas, the
invitation to sing at St. James on March 31 is just the latest in an increasing
number of requests.

Spring Break 07’ Washington Style

Lion Cheerleader Shoots for the Stars

Mars Hill College Sophomore Andrea Powell will be traveling to Texas to try
out for the Dallas Cowboys cheerleading squad. “I was watching a past tryout on cable television channel CMT [Country
Music Television], and I was like, I can do that,” said Powell.

Local Woman Falls From Ski Lift

Wolf Ridge Ski Resort, where many Mars Hill Students get their first taste of
alpine sports, was the scene this winter of a ski lift accident that has left
Mars Hill community member Carrie Lee Hoffman with long-term injuries. Hoffman
is the daughter-in-law of the late college Vice President Richard Hoffman.

Cloggers Honor Diversity in Spring Show

In their annual concert titled "Immigrant Sole," Mars Hill's Bailey Mountain Cloggers reviewed with their feet the influences of Irish, Spanish, and African-American syles and rhythms on American dance, not forgetting the mountain heritage of clogging itself. The show, directed by '06 alumna Danielle Buice, ran Friday through Sunday (March 30 - April 1) in Moore Auditorium.

Ladies of Distinction Turn Distinct Women
into Legends

The second annual Legends Ball hosted by the Ladies of Distinction was
held at Mars Hill College on Thursday March 29th. The Legends Ball is
a banquet designed to honor legendary and virtuous women at Mars Hill. Oprah
Winfrey developed the concept when she desired to honor legendary black
women of America.

Neither rain, nor sleet, nor dark of night...

Many college students have come to know the journey to the mailroom
as a day-maker or day-breaker. Getting a care package is like
Christmas; meanwhile getting no mail makes a student feel forgotten.
Mrs. Sue and Mrs. Brenda deliver mail to more than 1,000 students and
faculty members on a daily basis.

A Familiar Face in Admissions Office

Have you seen the new admissions counselor? Maybe you’ve seen
him in his fish-tank-looking office, or playing basketball, or running
around the campus, or maybe you saw him sitting in your class last semester.
Jon Stoehr, who graduated from Mars Hill College last December, is now
the temporary admissions counselor and coordinator of Intramurals at
Mars Hill College.

Mars Hill Campus Listed as Historic District

It's hard to walk through the Mars Hill College campus and not feel some sense of history with all of the old and varied buildings. But few people realize that it is collectively one of the most historic campuses in North Carolina. The Mars Hill College Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 12, 2006.

Mars Hill Unites to make Knowledge Bowl a Success

Students from eight Western North Carolina area high schools made their way to Mars Hill College on March 31 to participate in the Championship rounds of the 39th annual Knowledge Bowl. The Knowledge Bowl is an academic competition among high school teams that answer questions on various topics, including English literature and grammar, history, math, science, and general knowledge.

and Mother Conquers it All
Loretta Akins, 35, a West Virginia coal miner’s daughter, is a full
time student and mother. She is raising four children, Krystal, 14, Codey,
12, Courtney, 11, and Dillon (Bubba), 7. There was a time in her
life when she was a self-proclaimed Florida beach bum, but there's no room
for beaches in her schedule now.

Spring Weather
Encourages Friendly Rivalries

With the winter weather wilting and the warm air being welcomed, students
willingly while away the hours by participating in more outdoor activities. These
activities aren’t organized by the college, but by the students themselves. Student
Chris Hunt explains, “A bunch of students try to organize a weekly
game of football on Chapel Field. We usually have about ten to twelve
students show up, so it can be a lot of fun."

Fees Charged Here

Many students are finding that the open door of the Student Support Services
office is a welcome asset on a college campus where so many extras involve
a fee. The SSS program offers
a host of free services.
