SGA Officers Elected
by Jessie Young
The Student Government Association has new officers for the upcoming year of 2007-2008. President is Ryan Hubbard, vice president is Alex Sams, secretary is Trini Fares and treasurer is Maryanne Brown. All four ran unopposed. New class officers were also elected during voting on April 10.
Ryan Hubbard was elected SGA president. He is currently in his second year at Mars Hill College but will be classified as a senior for the fall of 2007. He is a biology major with a pre-med focus. He wants to be a doctor and now works as a Certified Nurse's Aid (CNA). He is an active member and historian of Delta Kappa Theta fraternity; a Church Leadership Scholar; and he has been selected to be a Resident Assistant (RA) in Huffman.
During the SGA campaign speeches on April 9 in Belk Auditorium, Hubbard addressed some of the issues that he would like fixed on campus by SGA. He will push for extended library hours, more flexible eating hours, and better lighting on campus. Hubbard says that he is a great time manager, and while most students fail under pressure, he “thrives.”
Sophomore Alex Sams was elected vice president. Sams is currently the SGA representative for the Christian Student Movement (CSM). He is a business major, an active member of the Mars Hill Cycling Team, is the CSM Publicity Chair, and is on Journey Teams. He was asked to run by current SGA Vice President Stephanie Brown. Yet he also says, “Most importantly, I feel that if I want to see things change, I need to get involved.”
Sams says his “first goal is to keep the ball rolling on the current issues that SGA is working on,” such as safety and student issues. The SGA vice president must lead the meetings, and he is eager to have them flow smoothly and productively. He says he is qualified for the position "because I have been a part of SGA for almost a year and a half now. I have a level-headed approach to tackling issues that face SGA.”
Freshman Trini Fares was elected secretary. She currently holds the position of Freshman Class Secretary. In that position she went beyond the call of duty, regularly sending notes from meetings out to every student, faculty, and staff member at Mars Hill.
Fares is a Bonner Scholar and an elementary education major. She hopes that by being elected to the executive board, she will make a difference in the student body. She says, “I want the students to feel that they are a part of a wonderful school and that they make a difference.” Fares was always involved in student government in her high school and wanted to continue in college as well. Her main goals for SGA are that people have a say in what they want done, and she wants to make sure that when students speak, their requests are met.
Junior Maryanne Brown was reelected to the position of SGA treasurer. Brown is an RA of Fox, a Bonner Scholar, is in Green Students United, and is an editor of Cadenza (campus literary magazine). Due to scheduling conflicts she was not able to make the campaign speeches, but she summarized her qualifications on a page in Facebook. While on the SGA board this year, she says she "helped get our computer labs back, worked at selling raffle tickets for our Spring Formal, helped start a scholarship fund for students who need books, and only missed ONE meeting all year because I was really sick. (cafeteria food.)."
Of the ten class representative positions, only three had official candidates. Two students ran for senior class president: Whitney Simmons and Wayne Morris. Morris won. Two students ran for junior class president: Renee Carr and Courtney Clark. Clark won the position. There were no other candidates for the other two positions in either class. For the sophomore class there was only one person on the ballot, Sable Adams for president.
The rest of the positions were left for write-ins. Those elected to senior class positions were Whitney Simmons, vice president, Ashley Grier, secretary, and Daniel Waymont, treasurer. For the junior class, vice president is Ryan McCoy and Sec/Treasurer is Caleb Lott. For the sophomore class, vice president is Kasey Boston and sec/treasurer is Katie Kunzmann.
There were vigorous last minute write-in campaigns for the SGA executive board positions. Hoping for a write-in position as SGA president was Julian Cuthbertson. He had hoped to be an official candidate, but did not get his 100 signatures turned in by deadline, 5 p.m. Thursday April 5. Porsha Lackey had her signatures turned in on time but switched the position that she was running for from treasurer of executive board to vice president.
Results were released less than two hours after the polls closed on April 10. According to Dean of Students Craig Goforth, 223 students voted.
