Senior Focuses on Students' Stress
By Rachel Connor
Stress is a part of life, but it can especially be highlighted during specific times in a young adult's college years. To better understand the causes and effects of stress, one Mars Hill College student is devoting her entire senior seminar project to the subject.
Jacqueline Lovik, an MHC senior from Asheville, recently asked the college to forward her stress survey to the entire student body via email. She said the results from the survey would be "extremely helpful to my project and my analysis."
The survey prompts students to identify significant life changes experienced in the last six months. Events listed on the survey include death of a parent, divorce between parents, marriage, loss of a job, and first term in college, among many other responses.
Lovik also asks students to describe their experience so far at Mars Hill and to rank their stress level concerning different stressors, like trying to diet, their lovelife, getting behind on school work, getting to class and other events.
The survey ranks stressors with points. Death of a parent is first, adding 80 points to a student's stress level. The higher the number of points, the more stressful the situation. A "failing grade in important or required class" totals 47 points, and the lowest stressor, "minor violations of the law," tacks on 15 points to stress intensity.
The survey is brief, only taking about two minutes to take, and it saves paper because it's done by email. Also, students can see their stress scores and learn about different life situations and their stress factors.
The deadline for the survey was last week. Lovik will present her conclusions at her senior seminar.
