College Offering Locals "Big Discount"
By DP Peterson

In recent months, many families have seen their incomes drop because of job shortages and tremendous lay-offs due to the recession. This will likely affect many high school seniors’ decisions on which college they will attend during the fall.

In an effort to help those students and their families, Mars Hill College is introducing the “Local Guarantee.” The “Local Guarantee” offers residents of Madison County who qualify one-third or one-half off tuition and fees, depending on their SAT scores and grade point averages.

The “Local Guarantee” applies to residents who have completed high school with at least a 3.0 grade point average and scored 1000 on the SAT. More specifically, students who have completed high school with a 3.0 average and scored at least 1000 on the SAT are guaranteed at least one-third off their tuition and fees. Students who have completed high school with at least a 3.5 are guaranteed one-half off their tuition and fees.

"Many local students may prefer the environment of a small college to a large university, or they may have other good reasons for wanting to stay close to home to attend college,” Bob McLendon, vice president for administration, said in a press release from the college.

Mars Hill College is striving to prove that superior education doesn’t have to cost much anymore. According to McLendon, the Local Guarantee lets the residents of Madison County know that an excellent education is affordable with lots of personal attention on the student.

"We’re here to say, yes, you can afford a quality private education at Mars Hill College, and we stand ready to help you,” he said.
