In honor of Women's History Month, the Ladies of Distinction group at Mars Hill College organized a Semi-Formal Ball in Redway Dining Hall March 29, drawing more than 40 guests.
The LOD group was founded in 1989 as a group for female African Americans. A few years later, it welcomed women of all racial and ethnic backgrounds.
The Legends Ball was an effort to show appreciation for women of all nationalities who have paved the way for women today, as well women who are currently creating legendary things. The LOD arranged for special guest Pastor Aldvetta Singleton from Atlanta, GA to speak and honor all female organizations and female faculty and staff on campus.
Pastor Singleton read a moving poem about the need for women to collectively rise and speak up, not only for themselves but for the advancement of women's liberties.
A member from each MHC Sorority spoke of one special female that was voted as a legendary role model for its organization and received an award from a LOD member at the close of each speech.
"I pray that it will become an annual event -- something that women look forward to every year for women's history," said Jasmine Young, a key leader of LOD and daughter of special guest speaker Pastor Singleton.
