Cold Mountain is a popular movie at the moment, depicting the lives and times of people from the area around Cold Mountain, North Carolina, during the Civil War. Madison County, not far from Cold Mountain, was home to many similar but real events that transpired during the Civil War and have not been forgotten.

Student Explores Stories of Civil War Women

One woman dressed like a man so she could fight beside her husband. Other women were tortured to reveal where their loved ones were hiding. Still others wrote desperate letters of loneliness. Andrea Farr, a history major and senior at Mars Hill College, explored these stories and more in her research paper on "Women's Experiences in Civil War Western North Carolina." The paper will be presented at the Appalachian Studies Association's 27th annual conference on March 26-28 in Cherokee, North Carolina. The conference is being co-hosted by Mars Hill College and the Cherokee Nation.

Lions Baseball Seeks the Sun

For most students spring break is a time to relax, sleep in, and take care of some extra schoolwork. This was not the case for the Mars Hill Lions baseball team. The week of March 13-21 consisted of ten games and a trip to Florida.

Christian Student Movers Vacation (?) in the Bahamas

Seven members of the Christian Student Movement were stretched in their faith and testimony in the Bahamas during Spring Break.The mission group had originally planned to go to Haiti, but Haiti became unsafe for American travelers. They were able to arrange a trip to the Bahamas, a place crowded with college students.

War Aniversary Draws Peace Coalition

Hundreds of people gathered in Asheville on March 20 to rally for peace on the one-year anniversary of the American war on Iraq. It was the first major activity for the newly formed Mars Hill Peace and Justice Coalition, made up of a group of Mars Hill College students and faculty members.

Television Media, A Possible Reality for Mars Hill College

Few people know that Mars Hill College has two TV channels and equipment to videotape and broadcast campus events and activities, sports activities, concerts, jam sessions, or possible news shows. Most of the equipment to make this possible is sitting in the Harris Media Center.

The Mears Stadium lights are on, and the yelling is coming from there. A lacrosse game is being played, and your fellow schoolmates are doing the yelling. Very likely you had no idea Mars Hill College had a lacrosse team, but the score board shows that they are pretty good this year

Workers earning low salaries find it difficult to pay for their daily needs in today's society. Tina Pippin, professor of Religious Studies at Agnes Scott College in Atlanta, Ga., shared her reflections on worker justice and explained the Living Wage Campaign at Agnes Scott during Crossroads on March 9.
