MHC’s Green Ideas

In January, the college asked students, faculty and staff to offer ideas to improve the environmental sustainability of campus. This list represents a few of the many responses provided by 31 respondents. Their responses were edited for style.

  • Protect all green spaces – Let’s act like we value them as points of beauty and habitat for birds and wildlife.
  • How about small solar units with batteries for night lighting? (Elon University has these)
  • Create seed money for future student initiatives. Work with students to promote a nominal green fee ($5 or $10/yr). Students decide how to apply proceeds toward green initiatives.
  • Place can, bottle and paper recycling bins next to all trash cans to make it easy for people to make the right choice.
  • Recycle bins in athletic facilities for plastic. We go through a lot of plastic bottles at home games and even more at camps in the summer time. This would be a great way to help the environment and reduce waste. In an ideal world these recycle bins would look nice, too. We want to impress people when they walk into the gym lobby or the stadiums and ball fields. We want them to look good too!
  • Provide a way to give clothing and useful items not needed by students to needy families in Madison County.
  • Install solar panels that create electricity.
  • Rain capturing cisterns for toilet flushing and other appropriate uses.
  • A campus-sanctioned and supported “green movement” on campus. One or more weeks dedicated to green education for students and the community.
  • Campus wide education/good habits: Promote the 3 Rs, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and provide the means to do them easily.

Hilltop Print Edition in PDF

The Hilltop print edition, the first in seven years, is available online as a PDF. The print issue is being distributed across campus and in several locations in Mars Hill, Marshall and Weaverville. It is a supplement to the ongoing student journalism posted here at hilltop.mhc.edu. With the hardcopy return, the goal is to publish four issues each school year, twice each spring and fall. The next issue should be printed in early May. Advertising is available now as well for both the online and print editions of The Hilltop. Check advertising rates.
