Tuition, Programs, and Buildings All Going Up

Tuition will go up again next fall at Mars Hill College. Students in 2008-2009 will pay 5.75 percent more in tuition and fees for a yearly total of $19,894. That is $1,082 more than this year. The cost of meal plans will increase about 6 percent and the cost of living on campus will increase an average of 8 percent, with variances depending on particular dorms.

New Building Will Answer Multiple Needs

Plans are currently underway for a new building on the Mars Hill College campus. It will be named Day Hall after Troy and Pauline Day. Originally planned for business classrooms and facilities, Day Hall now promises to be a diverse, multi-purpose building that will alleviate many campus needs.

Student Government Launches Smoking Survey

Are you interested in smoking anywhere on campus without being persecuted for it? Or ---are you sick of walking through a cloud of smoke on the way into your classroom building? The Student Government Association has distributed a survey asking students if they want a smoke-free campus. A survey has been placed in each student's mailbox.

LOD Legends Ball Honors Selfless Service

In their way of recognizing Women's History Month, the Ladies of Distinction held their third annual Legends Ball on Thursday March 6. The Ladies of Distinction, a community service organization, sponsors the "Legends Ball" as a way "to give back to the community at school and give credit to where it is due."

Gladly Would He Learn, and Gladly Teach

English Professor Noel Kinnamon comes from a Carolina farm family with little conventional education, but he spends his vacations in England among books in the libraries of Oxford University. He has won numerous awards and fellowships, and has taught at Mars Hill for 42 years.

Climate Change Activist Will Speak in Broyhill

Robert Musil, a long time leader of the peace, nuclear disarmament, and environmental movements, will speak at Broyhill Chapel on Monday, March 10 at 7 p.m. on "Climate Change: How Americans Can Have Hope on a Heated Planet." He will also speak the following morning at Tuesday's Crossroads: "Why Scientists and People of Faith Both Want to Save the World."

Sister Helen to Speak on Death Penalty

Sister Helen Prejean, author and advocate for the abolition of capital punishment, will speak at Mars Hill College on Thursday, April 3. The college will show Dead Man Walking, a film based upon Sister Helen's best-selling book of the same name, on Tuesday, March 4. A panel of defense lawyers and prosecutors will speak about the issue of capital punishment on Tuesday, March 25.

Pakistani Businessman Builds Life in Mars Hill

As you approach the counter, you hear this voice saying to you, "What's up my man, my lady, my bro? What can I get you, and is that going to be it for you, man?" Every one calls him Ali, but few people know that's just his last name. His full name is Fahim Ali. He is the owner of The Country Hub and Chevron gas station in Mars Hill. Ali is 34 years old. He hails from Karachi, the biggest city in the South Asian country of Pakistan.

Rhonda Vincent Coming to Mars Hill College for Benefit Show

Rhonda Vincent, award-winning bluegrass performer, will appear at Mars Hill College with her band "The Rage" for a concert benefiting Madison County Habitat for Humanity. The event will be held in Moore Auditorium on April 20 at 3 p.m. All proceeds will go towards building a home for a local family.

Roommate Matchmaker Pairs the Musically Harmonious

Todd Oldenburg, director of residence life at Mars Hill College, is the roommate matchmaker. He's the one who reads the surveys and matches roommates. He's the one who gets the complaints when it does not work out. Oldenburg has been involved with residence life at various colleges for fifteen years. He uses a roommate matching questionnaire to try to successfully match roommates. The most important thing he considers is music.

Mars Hill College Professor is "America's Next Great Crime Writer"

Mars Hill College English Professor Hal McDonald doesn't watch a lot of television, so he never saw the advertisement on Court T.V. for "America's Next Great Crime Writer." He stumbled across a flyer promoting the contest one day when he was cleaning out his mailbox. The contest deadline was less than a week away, and McDonald was about to go on Thanksgiving break.

Giving Blood: A Costless Boost to Karma

Everyone expects blood to be at the hospital in their dire time of need. But what if it isn't? In fact, blood is continually in short supply. To try to meet the need, the Delta Kappa Theta fraternity at Mars Hill College held a blood drive on Wednesday February 27 in Wren Student Union. About 70 people showed up; of those, 58 were eligible to give blood.

Flu Season: The Worst May Be Over

This is the season of flu and colds, but the worst may be over, according to Leslie Anderson, RN - director of medical services at the Mars Hill College Wellness Center. The Center received 320 visits during February from students who were feeling sick, but the numbers peaked during the second week of the month and have been declining since then.
