Graduate Program on Drawing Board
by Kacie Cardwell
Mars Hill College may soon establish a graduate program that would be implemented within a couple of years.
"The board has approved our request to do the first graduate program, which will be in education," said President Dan Lunsford.
"Education is a very popular program for us, very strong in terms of reputation." He hopes that in the future the program may expand to master's degrees in other departments, such as business and social work. Lunsford is a former dean of the college's education department.
Next year, he said, the college will invest about $50,000 in start-up costs for the master's program. The money will support the efforts of a faculty member to plan and design the program. That will include writing it up, submitting it to accreditation authorities for approval, designing the materials for recruitment of students, and starting the publicity on the program.
Lunsford maintains that a graduate program will increase opportunities for students at MHC, creating a "seamless transition from an undergraduate program to a graduate program."
It will also enhance the image of the college, as well as please alumni, he said. "Having a graduate program says to the larger world that we are a broad-based institution."
Lunsford hopes that the initial classes will begin some time between the summer of 2009 and the spring of 2010. He estimates that the first class size will likely be at least twelve to fifteen students with about four courses. After a year, a second group of graduate students around the same size would start classes.
