Outdoor Center Thanks its Sponsors

Outdoor Center leader Grant Gosch and a student delegation recently traveled around Asheville to pay homage to the businesses that have made Mars Hill Outdoors a reality. The Outdoor Center has had to rely completely on fundraising and sponsorships during its first year because the college is not going to have a budget for the Outdoor Center until next year.

The fundraisers so far have been successful. The only glitch was the theft, from the cafeteria, of a pair of skis and snowboard donated by Ski Country Sports for a raffle earlier this year.

"If it had not been for our sponsors, making the Outdoor Center work --with all that we have done -- would have been much more difficult," says Gosch. He is hoping for the same kind of commitment from these sponsors in the future.

A delegation from the Outdoor Center went to personally thank Brooks and Medlock Engineering, Preferred Properties Real Estate, Ski Country Sports, S&ME Civil Engineering, and Diamond Brand Outdoor Outfitters on Friday March 4. Along with a big thank you, these businesses received a hat and a fleece vest with the Mars Hill Outdoors logo on them.

Gosch, and students Stephanie Hasty, Travis Sullens, Justin Risberg, Matt Davis and Jeremy Edwards made up the thank you party. The contributions from sponsors have already helped the Outdoor Center by supplying sleeping bags, camping stoves, sleeping pads, and other camping supplies that students will be able to rent from the Center for a small fee, starting the week after spring break.

The Center is located at the Heritage Cabin across from Renfroe Library. Currently there is enough equipment for 10 to 15 people, but the plan is to grow. The equipment was used for the first time the night of March 5, when the Center hosted a camping trip to the top of Bailey Mountain. There are also plans for a camping and hiking trip in the Linville Gorge, as well as a trip to Lake Jocassee for sea kayaking.

Gosch wants the center to be able to supply students with whatever they need to go out and have a comfortable and fun outdoor outing. He plans to have these sponsors' support for years to supplement a budget provided by the college. That would fund gear, outings, and pay students who qualify to lead these outings.
