Climate Change Activist Will Speak in Broyhill
by Paul Annas

Robert K. Musil, Ph.D., M.P.H.
|
Robert Musil, a long time leader of the peace, nuclear disarmament, and environmental movements, will speak at Broyhill Chapel on Monday, March 10, at 7 p.m. on "Climate Change: How Americans Can Have Hope on a Heated Planet." He will also speak Tuesday morning at Crossroads on "Why Scientists and People of Faith Both Want to Save the World."
Musil is best known for his service as director of Physicians for Social Responsibility from 1992-2006. He helped launch their environmental program by leading campaigns for safe and affordable drinking water, clean air, toxic pollution prevention and climate change awareness.
He has also initiated the Mexico Border Project in El Paso and Juarez, Mexico, and has represented PSR in negotiations in Montreal, Kyoto, Johannesburg, and Geneva. He sits on the National Advisory Panel of the Center for Children and Environmental Health at the Mt. Sinai Medical Center.
Musil's visit has been arranged by Philosphy Professor Kathy Meacham, who has known him for more than 25 years. Meacham and Musil attended church together in Philadelphia.
"He is a man who continuously seeks connections," says Meacham. "He's a good story teller, has tons of energy, and whoever says I am an extraverted person is wrong because Dr. Musil is so extraverted he makes me look like I am introverted."
Meacham promises that Musil will bring a sense of enlightenment to both the science and the politics of climate change and the heated topic of global warming.
Associate Professor of Business Paul Smith expects that Musil will discuss implications for the state of the earth -- not only ideas of what is to come physically, but also advice on "faith and sustainability."
Musil graduated from Yale with a degree in English. He earned a Ph.D. in English from Northwestern University and a second doctorate at Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. "He has a background in a liberal arts education," Meacham said, implying that students at Mars Hill can go far with a liberal arts education, too.
Musil is currently a Scholar-in-Residence at American University in Washington, D.C., where he teaches Nuclear Studies and Global Environmental Politics. A former Army captain who taught communications and policy at the Defense Information School, Musil refused orders to Vietnam and was honorably discharged as a conscientious objector.
Musil serves on the Boards of the Environmental Alliance, Population Connection, 20/20 Vision, the Council for a Livable World, and the Herbert R. Scoville Peace Fellowships.

Dr. Musil's speeches were great. He’s an environmental genius.
