Lisa Richards was working toward her college degree while married, was raising a seven month old baby girl, and was serving her country -- all at the same time.
Then she was called to active duty in late January and had to leave her studies and family behind. "She was distraught about leaving her baby," said Biology Professor Jo Ann Croom.
Richards had gone on inactive status when the baby was born, but "when her whole unit was activated she had to go," Croom said. Her husband, who is in a different reserve unit, is taking care of the baby.
Before Richards left, she brought the baby to Mars Hill to say good-bye. "She's an adorable little baby. Unfortunately, neither her parents nor her husband's parents can assume care of the child," said Croom.
"We women have fought for equality so long that when we get it, it's not always what we hoped. This is definitely the down side."
Richards is a senior biology major at Mars Hill College and was in the Physician's Assistant program.
"Lisa is a very good student and a hard worker. She also has a positive and upbeat personality," said Croom. "I know Lisa will do what she has to do with the very best attitude that she can muster."
