Jonathan Luther Flowers
by Heather Tourtellotte

Jonathan Flowers

Jonathan Flowers, a freshman from Eildon, North Carolina, was called to active duty just two weeks after starting Mars Hill College in 2003. He is a Marine, and his unit is stationed in Wilmington, NC.

While Flowers was still at Mars Hill he did an assignment for Virgina Bower's freshman English class. The assignment was to draw a family shield and explain it.

Since he comes from a family of Marines, his shield had the United States Marine Corps motto, Semper Fidelis, which means "Always Faithful."

In his paper he explained that "The motto seems appropriate since several members of my family have served in the Marines and the majority of the members of the family share a belief in some divine force that will guide the way through life."
