Floor Hockey Opens Spring Intramural Season
by Shawn Esworthy
Daniel Amick, coordinator of intramurals, predicts an exciting semester of basketball, floor hockey, Ultimate Frisbee, ping pong, poker, volleyball, and disk golf. "We may also have flag football," says Amick, adding, "It could not get started in a better way than with floor hockey."
Floor hockey kicked off on Monday, January 21, and continued through Thursday, January 31. The winner was "Team Canada," so called because two Canadians, Chad Skinner and Nate Lockey, were on the team.
Amick believes this is the first time floor hockey has been played on campus as an intramural. It is played like ice hockey, except it is played on a gym floor with a tennis ball. The players use a floor hockey stick to hit the ball into an indoor soccer net. The goalkeeper uses a baseball glove instead of a real hockey glove to keep the ball from going into the net.
"There are not many rules," says Amick. There are three periods, each period lasting ten minutes. The team that scores the most goals at the end of the third period wins. The only two rules are that the blade is not allowed to go above the player's waist, and rough play is not allowed.
Each team can have up to eight players, with a minimum number of five. Only five players are allowed on the court. At least one girl must be on each team.
Three teams signed up to play in the tournament, but one of them never showed up to play. Team Canada defeated the other team twice and won the six remaining games due to forfeit. The team they had defeated - their only opposition -- failed to appear after the first two games, not even showing up for the championship. A picture was taken of Team Canada wearing their championship tee shirts.
Amick said it was amazing to see Team Canada play. He said Nate Lockey, a junior from Ontario Canada, took on a role similar to that of Quarterback Tom Brady of the New England Patriots football team. "It was like Nate Lockey playing the part of Tom Brady, quarterbacking Team Canada to victory, with a wonderful supporting cast," said Amick.
Jason DeVries, one of the goal keepers for Team Canada, came to the team after being cut from one of the opposing teams. Team Canada decided to give him a shot. "I am thankful that I got a great opportunity to play for a championship caliber team," he said. "Team Canada took a chance on me, and I gave them my heart."
The intramural season will continue next week, with volleyball beginning Monday, February 4, a ping-pong tournament shortly after that, followed by poker, disc golf, and ultimate Frisbee.
"Basketball, scheduled for April 7, is usually our biggest turnout," Amick said. "It is the most competitive."
