My grandparents started a Christian school and church in my community, and I attended both until after my sophomore year of high school. My childhood was a happy one filled with playing in the woods or at a make-believe house with my neighborhood friends who went to church and school with me. We were sheltered, not from books or religious knowledge – we probably knew more than we should have. We were sheltered from worldly knowledge. We filled our time with Monopoly, tackle football and acorn fights but not much television and video games because we only got a handful of channels and an early Nintendo.

I lived in a trailer with my parents and four other siblings for the first 10 years of my life. My father became a licensed contractor and opened his own business, and a few years later he designed and built a beautiful home for my family on the same road as our trailer. As we moved in, I moved into another phase of life, the one between being a child and a teenager; my youngest brother was also born – something my parents had not planned. So I became the second child and oldest girl of six children or what I like to describe to people as “Mama number two.” Having so much responsibility at that young age shaped me into the person I am today, but my mother says it was natural and quotes from It’s A Wonderful Life that I “was born older.”

The Christian school shut down at the end of my sophomore year primarily due to financial reasons, and I transferred to the local public high school. I made the volleyball team and felt like I had really accomplished something. I played basketball, too, but I sat on the bench most of the time. I only played volleyball my senior year but became captain.

I decided to come to Mars Hill College because I received the Bonner scholarship. I really like Mars Hill College and am trying out for the volleyball team this semester. I am meeting new friends and learning so much about life. I am thankful that this college has become my new home.
